The Good Shepherd Convent Mottukal

The Good Shepherd Convent, rooted in the vision of St. Mary Euphrasia Pelletier, has been serving the marginalized with compassion and inclusivity for 100 years in Chennai. Dedicated to the empowerment of women and children in challenging circumstances, the Sisters, along with their Partners-in-Mission, provide education, care, and holistic support to transform lives.

Mottukal is a Tamil word, meaning ‘Buds’, is a need-driven organization dedicated to girl children requiring care and protection, while also engaging in community development initiatives.

Following the precepts of ‘compassion’ and ‘merciful love’ towards suffering communities, as taught by our Foundress St. Mary Euphrasia Pelletier, the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, in association with their Partners-in-Mission, have been carrying out their mission among the slum communities since 1996.

In 29 years, 3,765 girls were rescued and rehabilitated, and residents of 18 slum  communities around Nungambakkam are supported through Mottukal outreach programmes.

In 2017, the Ministry of Social Defense, Government of India, recognized ‘Mottukal’ as a competent organization to operate an ‘Open Shelter’ for at-risk girl children. In the same year it was registered under (Proc.No.5778/D1/2017) (Reg. by: Department of Social Defense (FAC) under Juvenile Justice Act- 2015).
